Last week we had a station wide meeting about the changes taking place in news. We were told that the internet would soon be where we judge ratings. Hits on the web will soon count towards ratings. Which means that now our job is geared 50 percent towards TV and 50 percent towards the internet. Management also explained how we would be changing our workflow and what we do each day without making staffing changes. My question is, How come some stations are not doing the internet thing? Do they think things are going to stay the same forever? Some stations don't even post video. Why?

The same reason some newsrooms used typewriters, carbon scripts and mechanical teleprompters while other stations were using computers and electonic prompters ... some wait to change to the invevitable.
The benefit to waiting is you get to see everyone else go thru the growing pains of trial and error and when you finally make the switch, it more seamless.
But I say it's more fun to make the change FIRST.

What are the changes? Will you guys now turn around quicker for the web? Curious. . .What are the specifics?

We have that same issue. We were told there are now "no deadlines" meaning when breaking news happens, we have to stream it on the web. What sucks is sometimes we have to shoot live for the web AND for our story at the same time. The problem I bet you all can see. We are leashed to our live truck and we cannot move much and have fluid movements. But it does not always happen. We have to do a lot more t's and as lives for the web. They say that we will also have stories that are intended not for air but exclusively for the web.
We had that talk about the move over to the web about five months or so ago. I understand the idea but doing stories exclusively for the web and on top of our on air stories...we are just running out of time.
