Going freelance over local news

Sorry if this topic has been brought up a bunch of times---I am thinking of going freelance and getting out of local news.

Pros and cons? Essential needed gear? Costs for the gear? I hear a Sony 600 is pretty standard---very solid camera for the freelance world.

If you have the clients who want you with your gear by all means go for it. if not, give the illusion that you own gear and rent it as needed.
