While coming out of a store yesterday, this lady yelled at me from her car....Hey Mister! Do you work for CBS? Yes I do, while picking up my pace to get away from her. My kids want your autograph! she says. Almost 4 yrs in the biz and this was a first for me. Anybody else a famous celeb photog like me? :D

The only time I ever gave (or was asked) for an autograph was at a Special Olympics event. The athletes were quite excited at a real live Channel X cameraman in their midst and once one asked me to scribble my name, the floodgates opened until I got writer's cramp.

I felt a little foolish, but I would have been a complete ass if I'd spoiled the Special Olympians' fun.

Probably shouldn't have charged them, though...

Never given an autograph but I was asked a couple times. When I was a young buck I used to shoot a lot of minor league baseball, and after the games would go in and out of the locker room a lot for various reasons. After the game some kids would think I was a player and hound me for my John Hancock. Even better was some of the groupies would try and figure out which player I was...wish I had acted on that!! Talk about life regrets ;)

I've gone into classrooms where elementary school kids would ask for it, and I would embarassingly comply, but I would also pass a sheet of paper around and ask for theirs.

They really seem to like that.

It's happened every once in a while -- usually on a school story or a Special Olympics kind of thing. I can remember signing a whole pile of Beta tape labels for kids after a classroom shoot years ago -- I used to always keep a few dozen in my fanny pack to hand out in situations like that. I have to admit it's pretty flattering when someone passes on the reporter and asks ME for my autograph.

(Recently decaffienated . . .)

I've been asked a couple of times... Again, usually by Special Olympians or team "managers" or the like. If it's on a HS football night, I'll sign one of the mini plastic footballs we give to the cheerleaders to throw intp the crowd. The kids really get off when they get the "newsguy's" autograph anda little football... :D

Several years ago, I was in Lancaster, PA shooting a tractor pull (which is kinda like Special Olympics when you think about it :D ). I was shooting from the starting line as they hitch the tractors to the sled.

And during a break couple of kids came up to me, guess they were about 8 or so and asked me for my autograph. Well, no one has ever asked me for it (and hasn't since), so I said sure and did. Actually, it made my day.

Warren Hmmm. Doesn't surprise me. Where was it, the Buck?

I'm in Lancaster, so it doesn't surprise me. At what station are you located, Warren?

Whereas I'm in a small market, with a total turnover in airstaff on nearly and anual basis, and I've been arround for nearly a decade, I am often more recanisable than some of the airstaff.
Once a goup of us went to BW3's and I was the one that drew someone over to our table.

Waaaaaay back in the day my station then would play basketball games in small communities. They would have us come in and play their teachers and things like that. Pretty good crowds would show up hoping to see REAL tv people. Most of the time none of our anchors would show up because they were too old to play sports. The kids would ask for our autographs. It was pretty cool but I'm sure those ended up in the trash soon afterward.

For several years I worked on a
wonderful news segment called
"Northwest Journal", which appeared
within our newscasts once a week.
It featured people who generally
lived in very rural areas.

Most of the time we were the first
(and only) TV crew that they would
ever see in their lifetime, so it
was a special thrill for us to
be there. We had to be extra
careful about what we said and how
we acted...and this very often
involved giving them our autograph
and posing for photos with the
entire family...

I was often asked for my autograph
in a classroom setting...and I
remembered a news crew shooting video
in our school when I was in junior
high...I was thrilled at seeing
"someone from TV" in our school, and
I actually worked for that very same
news department many years later...
"you never know"... :D

Myself, the reporter, truck engineer and yes the intern were all asked for autographs by a couple of kids one night after a ten hit.

I turned to the intern while signing and said "Yeah, this happens all the time." Her eyes lit up, then you could see the episode and my words confirmed for her what she had always expected and the cheif reason she wanted to go into this line of work were true, with one word "reeeealy."

I was shooting backstage for the promotoer at a big concert with about a dozen top level artists. They were having all the artists sign a concert poster to aution for charity. Well, when they left us alone in the green room, you can imagine what happened . . . there's my signature right next to Steven Tyler's.

Once. I was doing standups in a suit and tie at the old Harrah's car collection. It was for a pilot for a travel program. Some kid thought I was a real TV reporter and asked for my autograph.

I hate it!
:)

We were shooting a story at a shelter after the hurricanes. A score of little kids followed us around. One got the idea to ask for our autographs -- everyone else followed suit. I think I gave out seven in one shot.

Here's the scene:Final game of the regular season for the 1987 Pittsburgh Pirates. After three straight horrible seasons, the Bucs beat the Phillies to climb out of the cellar and into fourth place. The locker room was one big party. Our sports guy was a collector and he asked a couple of players for their bats. As we are leaving the stadium, I'm carrying the gear and sportsboy had four bats over his shoulder. The fans outside the stadium thought our anchor was a player. He was MOBBED! He explained to everyone who he really was, but this little kid didn't believe him. He followed us to our car and he kept saying, "I know you. My dad told me about you. You're Sandy Alomar!". Our sports guy was so white, he looked like he was from Norway and most of us know the ethnicity of Mr. Alomar. Nevertheless, he signed the kid's book, "Best Wishes, Sandy Alomar".

I have done the autograph thing a couple of times, but there are other things tat take the cake.....

Tonight at my Friday Football assignment I am sitting in the Newstruck logging my shots when a bunch of teeny boppers knock on the window asking to be on teevee.

I didn't comply at first, but one of them let me use her cell phone when the station paged me and I realized I left mine home at supper.

To make a long story a little longer, I got out and got the group Yahoo shot to thank them for the use of the phone, and one of the more high strung ones turned around and shook it like a polaroid picture!

Then all these little girls half my age proclaimed their love for me. :)

Then when I walked back down to the sideline to talk to the coach a couple of cheerleaders were asking me if I was going to use the video of them I had taken earlier. When I told them it would definatley be in my highlights they all proclaimed their love for me. I laughed and nodded to them.

I had indeed planned to use my footage of the cheerleaders as my opening shot...but it wasnt' there when I started editing...I double clicked.

I don't guess they will love me anymore.

Where were these girls when I was their age? :D

I'm not usually a sucker for cute kids, but on my way to a big 9/11 memorial a couple of years ago a little boy looked up at me and said, "Mister, would you news me?"

I asked, "Do you mean would I put you on the news?"

"Yeah!"

"I'll see what I can do." His mom was of course thrilled and asked which station we were with, etc.

Later durring the event I saw him looking on and got a nice cut away which I was able to work in to the package. I don't know if he ever saw it. That's the only time I've ever done that sort of thing.

I don't think I've given out any autographs though.

I used to work with an education reporter in Memphis, and we worked up sort of an act. It involved hooking up the camera to a monitor and letting the kids see exactly what the camera was capable of. We'd also let the kids inverview each other, and let them see how yes-or-no questions don't really work for TV. These were some of my favorite days in the biz.

I've given out a couple at NASCAR races before.

"You work for ESPN?"

"Yeah"

"Can I have your autograph?"

"I'm nobody, just a camera guy"

"But you work for ESPN, right?"

"Yeah"

"Here, you can sign this page"

I've even signed a T-shirt with my reporter, too.

Strange...

Ya know, to a lot of people, we are as close to real celebrities as they will ever get,,, especialy if you're in a back-woods small market.
If you're in TV,,, any posiotn in TV,,, that's close enough for "Unkle/Daddy, and his young-uns,,, Nephew/son, and Daughter/neice....
They have no idea that we're just hard work'n folk just like them.

No autographs, but I did act as a human shield for a rather attractive little red-head once...

See, there was a knucklehead holding himself hostage after a brief pursuit and she would hide behind me every time he looked our direction. She had her arms around me and the whole nine.. Oh that was fun... Then when the cops had enough of the guy and popped him with a bunch of bean-bags he lost his nerve and pulled the trigger - the top of his head literally came apart - freaky... she of course wigged out big time. I of course offered my moral support during that traumatic moment. :D

After the moment was over I could tell she was digging me, so I asked her if she wouldn't mind running across the street and picking me up a pack of smokes as I was out. Sorry she says as she bats her pretty green eyes at me (yeah I know.. GREEN eyes - she was totally hot), I can't. I'm only 17.

17....

God....

Damn....

It.

Still, makes one appreciate the finer points of the "job".
