I apoligize if this has been discussed...

Does anyone know of a place to get inexpensive gels? In perticular I am looking for daylight correcting gels (I think that's the right term).

Thanks in advance!

B&H offers the standard Lowel daylight gel pack for around US$25.

They call it Lowel Rifa Daylight Gel Set for Rifa-lite 250

Check with Fletcher in Chicago as well.

if you have a theatrical lighting business in your town they would have them. I think B&H sells them. Rosco Gels are only about six dollars each and you can cut four gels out that fit the lowell gel holder.

Thanks guys.

We have the anton bauer lights atop our cameras, with the little flip down do-hickey.

Is it best just to clip the gels onto the flip down or onto the light it's self?

Erin,

I was assuming you were going to use the gels on some sort of stand light.

Yes, you can rig up some way to put a small piece of gel on your smaller light but...it's probably not going to last very long.

Is there no glass in the "little flip down do-hickey"?

Yeah there is glass, but it's not colored. It just difuses the light.

I have one piece of regular diffusion, and one of daylight correction in my bag with a binder clip on each. When I need to diffuse or adjust the top light, I just wrap one around the light and clip it in the back. The extra stuff sticks up above the camera, but who cares. That way I also have the stuff handy for a stand light.

My only problem with attaching it to the diffusion is that you'll take a lot of the already weak punch out of the light.

Just stinkin'...

You might also want to get some 'gel-jawz' made by lowell. B&H sells them. I think you get eight for about $12. they have a clip that holds the gel and another clip that hooks to the light or barndoor. works better and looks better than clothespins...

I stopped using gel-frames years ago.

Clothes pins are cheaper and quicker. You don't have to be as neat when cutting the gel to make it fit into the frame. Just use clothes pins to hold the gel or diffusion onto the barn doors.

Don't for get to ask someone in the studio if they have any scraps of colored gel they are throwing away. You don't need a big sheet of gel to add a splash of color to a background.

Good luck,

Hes

Tonight I was shooting a soccer package. The sun was going down and +12 DB was barely enough, yet it wasn't dark enough to switch over to the 3200K filter. I had an 8.0 WB. We still had some interviews to shoot which I wanted to match the day light B-roll I shot rather than look like we shot at night.

As I said, I cary a piece of Rosco 3202 daylight color correction gel in my run bag. It usually gives me about a 4.5 white so I doubled it up and got an 8.0. I still had to shoot at +12DB, but I shot tight and the interviews look much better than I thought they would. Rather than blue, the background is still green. They look like I shot them much earlier in the day.

I think next time we get some gels I'll ask for a 1/2 CTB 3204 so I can combine it with the other one to get some thing closer to a 6.0 WB if I need it.

We only do a 10:PM news cast. I don't get to do much day light lighting (no day time live shots) so this was interesting to me at least. :)
