the gear is really old, shared. they HAD some real nasty office politics going on. most of thier profits go to komos new building. fisher communications is in or was in bankruptcy protection. but portland is a market to fight to live in. many have come back even though the money isn't great.

The job posting is for KATU's bureau in Salem. Hope someone in the "know" can take the time to answer the following questions. Thanks in advance!

Do all the Portland Stations have Salem bureaus?
Who is the KATU Salem bureau reporter?
What's the equipment situation like?
What is moral like in the # 3 / 4 station?
Most importantly...what's the pay scale?

thats intersing as they hired full time the stringer from down thier.

the press area in the basment of the capitol has offices and almost all the stations have microwave back to portland from thier. but that doesn't mean it's really staffed by all the stations. its more like they have officail office space it's 45minutes from portland traffic permitting.

the previous GM's didn't reinvest in new gear many of thier cameras are over 10 years old. but the cars have resently been upgraded.

wouldn't know about pay.

Anyone know if this job is still open?

As of 09/19 it is still open. Eric Spooler is the assign. mg. it seems that he is doing the hire. (nice guy). Salem seems nice although you better like doing politics. The reporter there seems like a good guy also.

Equipment is quite old. The shift is a dayshift with a takehome car. ND is more like fox then abc.

Good shop but with some issues
Good luck

Think Eric would mind getting a call or email?

he is a busy guy, seems that he runs the place on some days. a quick e-mail might be better.

<How bad?>

OK, so KATU has issues. What kind of issues? Do photogs not have take-home gear? Is it a run and gun shop? Or do you stick with the same reporter usually and have time to produce decent stories?

I don't know how true this is, but I have heard that they will over hire, and then lay-off people later when sweeps/demand falls off. Might not be the best move. They seem to post more openings over KGW/KOIN, I have noticed. Usually that kind of turnover is a sign of something?
