Okay guys, this might seem a ridiculous question, but just what is the backfocus (what does it do)? How do you fix it if your shots are blurry and you know that its the backfocus that needs to be adjusted? What if you don't have a softaway (the adjustment chart)with you out in the field?

Backfocus is easy a cake to fix if you have a problem. First zoom in all the way and then focus with the backfocus ring ring only. It should have a little screw on it. Then zoom out. Is everything in focus? It should be. if not something is worng. After everything in is focus, tighten the backfocus ring screw and you are on your way.

Go to the B-Roll Online Tips and Tricks section (http://b-roll.net/tips/index.html) , then click on Camera Settings ;o)
Don't forget folks, B-Roll Online is full of info and it's not only here on the message board!
We've had a couple of good long threads about backfocus on this message board over the years. I tried to find them by using the search function above but, sadly, there is only so much space available for Kev to save stuff and those threads from the early days of B-Roll Online are long gone. That's why Kev gleans the best and saves it in other sections of B-Roll Online ;o)

For what it's worth, the backfocus controls the point of focus through the rear element of the lens. It exists because of changes in the distance from the back of the lens to the CCD block from camera to camera.

I would use a monitor to do any adjustments to the back focus. It's too important to get it right.
