They do have 2 slots, both entry level -nights/weekends, take home gear and some ENG work. Call for details. Both guys going to dream jobs elsewhere.
Despite what other negative posts say KSTP is still a good place to be.

I'll say it once again, I love KSTP however this maybe the only true negative thing said, but it's reality and it's sad. the sunsets have faded to darkness draped in melancholy disdain for the changes in practice.

no features, breaking news, unjournalistic decisions, loss of top talent for shower haired teenage reporters who don't know a story structure if it hit them in the head. Accompany this buy eliminating weekend reporters and having photojournalist run the stories alone for anchors or a night-side reporter. having to possibly start running our own live trucks, which some of us have not done in years or have never. no new cameras in site.

it is a sad story what is going on here. we’re all trying to keep positive! there maybe more openings soon.

Welcome to the REAL world of TV news. You're now faced with the reality that the majority of TV photogs in this country have been dealing with for years. This business has changed and you are first realizing that? You should thank goodness you've had it so great for so long. Now those days are over. Reality of this bottom line business is finally dawning in the twin cities and its only going to get more intense and nasty since the playing field was leveled with Magers departure from the market. Start learning how to operate ENG and sat trucks too. Run & gun is now here to stay.

All the best to KSTP... they have a great staff and our thoughts are with you!

Well, Dave Wertheimer has left the building and many of us suspect Mark will do the same.

It has to do with direction, direction, direction and it's not going in a good way. It's all about ethics. When you have HITLER as your News Director and SMOOCHIE as your boss and RAINBOW RANDOLPH walks out there is some severe problems.

KSTP we all feel is hanging in the balance. Many of us are very concerned out cheerleader has left
and our other one may be on the way.

I would not look here unless you can handle look-lives, 1:15 packages, running your live trucks, no sense of family anymore, and if you have morals and values.

SLASH/TRASH/SHORT/SWEET/ is the new look and direction. It's worse than a "Willy Wonka" flick mixed up with the "WIZ" and "FRIDAY the 13"

Positivity has left the building and soon will all the talented ones!

That's the spirit "Not Surprised", kick'em when they're down.

It's the old, "now they have to run and gun like the rest of us".

Whether you work at a station that gives you time to do a quality piece every now and then or not, when something like this happens, we ALL lose.

There aren't that many shops left where news management has a commitment to strong photojournalism. So when one of those shops that has been a leader in photography sees their whole direction change, it's just one more nail in the coffin.

Photographers in general lose, not just those at the affected station.

And nope, I don't work in Minneapolis.

You know I will say when good things fade it is just a matter of time when a new season of growth circles back.

Yes it is a sad thing to see, but from death comes compost which inturn replenishes the soil.

So to all that bash, take a look at your own self/spirit and mindset.

Do you replenish or just absorb?

Things to think about before you say "welcome to the club...this is just how it is?!?".

Do something to grow even if it is a little at the neck of the woods you work.

So to all that work up north, ignore the hatefull ones that float through this life wanting to be energy vampires...they are just after your positive vibes.

To all that are still rolling there...small victories every day man!

For many years photojournalism has been going down the tubes in the rest of the country, while people in Minny and Denver sat in their crystal castles and told the rest of us how it's supposed to be done. It's like a rich daddy's princess trying to tell poor people how to live, and when they tell her it's not as easy as she thinks, she just dismisses them as lazy and says they don't want to work hard. Naturally when the princess is tossed on her butt and has to learn how to live on her own in the real world, those poor people she insulted for so long don't have any sympathy for her.

Take up a mop and get to work, princess. Turns out this business is dirty.

Hey "not surprised," exactly when did your tape get rejected by the Denver and Twin Cities stations, anyway? There's a ton of bitterness coming from you. I'm saddened that this much hatred can come from a colleague. Some of us are trying to find goodness and quality any way we can, whereas you seem content to say that this business is pure evil and anyone who doesn't simply roll over for it is a fool.

That's exactly the attitude I'm talking about. You think you're part of some elite group of photogs who strive for quality while everyone else just rolls over, when in reality MOST photogs are trying to do the best work they can under the circumstances. These NPPA guys look down on people who work in run and gun markets and don't consider the skill it takes to get stuff on the air in the small amount of time they get to do it. These same guys are often carried by their reporters, then look down on the work of photogs who have the misfortune of working with reporters who aren't so good. These are guys who don't run live trucks, looking down on the guys whose work suffers because they do.

I was glad when our shop quit sending people to the workshops, because it was breaking their hearts. They would go out to Oklahoma and have their heads filled with high minded attitude from guys in Minny, Denver and the nets who haven't run a live truck in years, if ever. Then they would come back all excited, eager to put what they had learned into practice. Within a week they were frustrated as hell, because what they learned just wasn't practical under the realities of modern television newsrooms, and the reporters they were working with didn't adhere to the NPPA style they had drilled into their heads.

These guys come back and say 'That's not the way they do it in Denver.' We have to tell them 'That's not the way they do it anywhere BUT Denver!' Now the chickens are coming home to roost in these haughty stations, and they are getting a wakeup call that the rest of the country has left them behind. Let's see them look down their noses at the rest of us now, from inside that microwave truck as they cut their second package in less than 45 minutes in between live shots that they tuned and set up.

Welcome to the real world, princesses.

-Not Surprised

Personally, if someone is happy shooting quality stories, I'm happy for them. If someone has found a way to be happy and successful running and gunning, I'm happy for them too. But I cannot be happy for "Not Surprised." The world he lives in seems to be dark, miserable and confrontational. The rest of the world seems to understand that there's nothing wrong with joining the NPPA and there's nothing wrong with choosing not to join the NPPA. If only "Not Surprised" could understand that too...

Hey, "not surprised," you don't know what I do. I'm an NPPA guy in a run-and-gun market. I run live trucks, shoot gang-bangs, fly in the chopper, and edit packs in 20 minutes on an all-too-regular business. For the record, most photogs I've seen are NOT doing the best looking product they can under the circumstances. Instead they're doing their best to avoid work wherever possible: Hiding in the sports department with their Nextel "accidentally off," taking 30 minute smoke breaks, letting their reporter A-roll their pkg for them while they get some coffee and read the paper. I bust my ass because that's MY JOB, but I don't just give up on quality, like you. You think ever guy or gal that's won an award must've had the best camera, best car, best reporter, and 3 weeks to work on one package with no tape time restrictions. WAKE UP! Real news is being done by NPPA shooters too. Stop dancing for joy at the misfortune of others, because that earlier post was right, when one shop loses, our craft as a whole dies a little bit more. Get off your damn highhorse, "not surprised." It must be hard to stay up on it with that HUGE chip on your shoulder.

Positivity has left the building and soon will all the talented ones! Oh my goodness! You are so proud to work at KSTP you post unregistered! Just like me! If Dave is so great he'll get a job somewhere else. Too bad he didn't think about his family and get another job before crying like a baby and walking out of the building! Great example Dave! You're a real pro! Maybe Mark can do you one better and stomp his little feet before he too bails out. Too bad you can't cut it any more! Let us know about that next big job Dave! Tell us how far you have to move to get it too! Also let us know how the wife and kids like getting their lives wrenched out of normalcy just so you can prove a point about the direction of television news! Yeah you've got your priorities in line Dave! The job always comes first with you! Your actions are going to look really stupid when KSTP does better in the next year WITHOUT YOU AND YOUR ATTITUDE!

One more NPPA member has gotten a reality check in life and discovers the "formula" means nothing. Neither do the awards!

Wait a minute. Is this the same guy who was once fired for walking into a station's owner's office and DEMANDING a new car?

I find the hostility and mean spirited comments about Mark and Dave very disturbing. They certainly don't deserve it. I've met Mark, and he is down to earth, and very humble. There is no need to insult him.
This thing has nothing to do with NPPA, so some of you need to get off that horse. This has to do with change, either good or bad, some are not going to like it. Why do people that have nothing to do with the situation need to toss out insults to folks they've never even met? First, that's very unfair, especially doing it anonymously... that's chicken s**t. Secondly, it's unfounded criticm. You have no idea what those folks up north are going through; so, sitting there faceless behind you computer bashing people makes you an a-hole, and an idiot.
I don't personally have first hand info on the station, but I for one hope things work out for those that work there.

Part of me is glad that these boys in the Twin Cities actually have to set up their own live shots for once. At my shop we care more about lives than quality packs.

Then again... our craft has taken a serious hit. KSTP, KARE, KUSA are all stations that I look to for examples of quality storytelling and great shooting. I'm sure Dave's decision to leave was not easy. Then again I know that he knows he can write his ticket anywhere. Keep your head up Mark Anderson, "attitude is everything" is his motto. Some of you in this room can apply that to your owns attitudes on this board. Hopefully KSTP will adjust and keep cranking out quality work, they still have the staff to do it, I wouldn't bury them yet.

Some people don't know when they've got a good thing going.

David is one of them.

After 23 years he's on the street looking for work.

Too bad he couldn't have found a new job before he quit. That would have been the smart thing to do. Especially with a family to support.

Oh well, more opportunities for those of us still her and employed!

Thanks Dave! :D

It's pretty sad the you guys in the "real world" think the two choices are (a) NPPA or (b) Crap You Do.

At my shop, the guys all run their own trucks. They run-and-gun. But their stuff is lighted correctly and shot with sequences and natsound, etc., etc.

Just because you're not capable of doing quality work under deadline, doesn't mean no one can do it.

<Come on now>

Real ****ing mature "laughing at KSTP". Obviously you're not talented enough to work there.

I know Dave and I've met Mark. Two of the best guys I've ever met in my life.

I don't appreciate you laughing and mocking Dave's family either. That's crossing the line chicken****.
