Travel w/Gerber/leatherman, etc

If you have to fly somewhere, how do you travel with your Gerber/Leatherman? I see three possibilities...

1) FedEx it ahead of you. This would mean not having it the day before or after.
2) Check it with luggage. But if you're not travelling with checked luggage, that seems a big hassle.
3) Not take it. (To me, I rely on it so much that not having it, even if not needing it, would be weird).

Any other ideas?

I check mine. With the crappy gear I have, I can't afford to leave home without it.
