I am so over Blogs. Yes there are some good ones out there but just because anyone can Blog doesn’t mean they should. Some are just down right appalling but that doesn’t stop the proud author finding endless ways of promoting their inane drivel. Just because people are desperate to be in on the next big thing can’t change the fact that most Blogs are BORING. And no I don’t want any more emails telling me that so and so has 5 exciting new Blog sites to fill but nothing worth saying, please come and help get their page counter up. It’s just spam so go away.
Now even online magazines that I read don’t have articles and reviews any more they have Blogs on topics… so if it’s an article or review jammed packed with more about the writer, than the topic in it, who last week was a journalist but now is a Blogger, then is it really a Blog or a self important vanity piece?
Please give me a break from the endless self promotional flogging of Blogging.
p.s. this obviously doesn’t apply to Lenslinger and some others but I just seem to be getting an endless supply of “Check out my Blog emails” and I have toothache… hang on… what a good idea for a Blog, tune in for the thrilling step by step account of my root canal… oh wait its been done.

I would have to say I agree with you 100%, but I have been too lazy to post about it. Now that you've done it, I will second it.
Most people aren't even interesting to talk to - why would their writing be any more interesting? And I just *love* the blogs that also include the type of music the idiot is listening to as they write. Absolutely fascinating ;)

I agree with you 100%. Boring, pointless blogs need to be deleted from the internet and the authors should be flogged and made to live in a puddle of moldy jell-o.
By the way, my blog has MOVED!

I think blogging is just shy of reaching critical mass. Once the novelty wears off, many of the less viable sites will fade away, while those with something to say (however political, navel-gazing, annoying...) will continue to regularly post their thoughts in cyberspace.
I for one never intended to become a blogger, but it's really helped me develop a writing discipline. But now that I've gotten in the habit, I'll probably feed the addiction for the forseeable future. As for the term 'blog', it will no doubt continue being the punchline of jokes. It's a shame really, as a blog is the container, not the content. As everyone knows they can range from political screeds to pet photos to daily cereal consumption analysis.
Hey, that reminds me - did I ever tell you guys about the time I found a sugar-coated moth in my Honeycomb? It was a chilly Fall morning, I think I was wearing my Jetson pajamas, you know, the ones with Elroy on the ass-flap...anyway, there I was shoving spoonfuls down my throat when...uh, nevermind.

I started blogging because I love to write. I find most Photographers enjoy writing and wish they could do more in the job. Hell, nearly every lensman I know wants to be more creative with the craft. Blogging gives me the creative outlet I can't get from the job. It also keeps my skills sharp so when I do get the chance to write a script for a pkg, I can take up the keyboard like I take up the lens.
As for blogs being boring. Well, a lot of media is just that, boring. Many newscasts are boring. It's up to the viewer, or this case, the reader to find what keeps them reading. I have had many people tell me how they think I have a cool job. Well, now I can share with them just how cool it is.
Even though my member number and login information are new, I have been a part of this website for a long time. I have written stories for this site. Kevin didn't couldn't publish every story I sent so I, and others, went out on our own. I'm not trying to get big hit numbers or sell you anything, I just enjoy writing about my job. In the past, my creative outlet was here and in NewsPhotographer. Now I have my own place. I think of my blog as going Freelance.

Inspired by the King (http://lenslinger.blogspot.com)..
I created my own blog (http://www.lightscamerajackson.blogspot.com). Sometimes I write stories about work.. And other times I post pictures of my son for family and friends to view.
Either way.. I appreciate it when people link from a B-Roll (http://www.b-roll.net) thread for a small view into my wild and crazy life.

My blog is only in operation when I'm on an overseas assignment... then it stops. Helps me stay connected to my friend a family, as well as providing a different perspective... other than that, I'm a non-blogger!

The blogging phenomenon is a blessing to truly creative people. It gives them hope and courage. When someone with real talent or truly interesting ideas is feeling like he doesn't really have what it takes to succeed, simply reading the inane drivel on other people's blogs will make him realize how truly boring most people with creative pretensions really are.
So here's to you, bloggers. A generation of writers and artists will someday look back and thank you for showing them what happens when you share too much and try too hard to convince people you have anything of consequence to say.

It's the least we can do, Shaky. At least we're not serial posters to industry message boards. THAT would be pathetic...

You're absolutely right. I should stop doing that.

Promise you never will, as b-roll just wouldn't be the same without your trademark snarkiness.
You know, I kind of agreed with cameragod until I thought about why I blog.
Part I-
The main reason is simple; I work hard to make sure that I can do just about every task in the news foodchain (fear of obsolecence). The internet is becoming part of that. I know that simple xhtml code isn't really part of the internet content equation in the future. But it's kind of like the two campers and the bear. The bear chases them, they run, one stops and puts on running shoes, the other guy says you'll never outrun him, reply; I just have to outrun you.
What am I getting at? A little knowledge is sometimes all you need to keep from getting eaten up.
Part II-
I could care less what guys in KC or Dallas are doing (unless it's something cool). But I'd argue that blogs haven't come close to a saturation point. It would be great if every shooter in Portland (for example) had a photog blog. Even if it was a couple of sentences I'd love to know what some of the guys at my station and others are up to. One of the things I love about the job is shooting the bull with other cameramen. Getting the low down from a guy you briefly saw on a shoot would be interesting.
Part III-
I do it because I'll completely forget otherwise.
Part IV-
Some of the blogs will develop into something worthwhile and that, in and of itself, is... worthwhile.
With that I've updated my info to reflect my status as a closet blogger.
... halfway to 1000
