What's ya'll's favorite still camera? Point&Shoot or SLR? Anybody start off in still and move on to video?

Call me old-fashioned, but my Canon EOS-1V is like an old friend, and the 17-35f2.8"L" is my favorite lens of all time...followed by the 70-200f2.8.

I contemplate a switch to digital in the near future but fear the learning curve.

I keep a 20 year old Pentax K1000 in my news unit. It still takes some great photos.

I'd like to get a digital, but haven't made up my mind on which one yet.

Canon Digital Rebel-S.

For around $800, you get 6.4 megapixels...a decent 28-80 lens. Not only is it digital, but it's a true SLR--no more shutter-lag when you press that button.

I can't tell you how many times I missed a cute shot of my daughter...pressing the damn button on a point-and-shoot camera (a pretty pricy one, too..a Sony DSC-85)...only to lose the shot because my daughter moved before the damn shutter opened.

Yeah, you can spend $3K...or even $1,200 for a "better" digital SLR. BUt for everyday all-around shooting, you just can't beat the digital Rebel for the money.

The other thing I forgot to add--and it's a MAJOR one--is that with the Canon SLR, you can actually accurately frame your shot while looking through the viewfinder: What you see in the viewfinder is what the glass (lens) is framing.

On the point-and-shoot, you always have to look at the LED screen on the back of the camera--not very comfortable for practical for shooting.

Sometimes the old reliable ones are the best.

I personally have loved the Nikon F3 with the 80-200, and a Mamiya 645. I used both of these while working for the school newspaper in college.

As for digital I have a Canon A85 that works great. To reduce the shutter lag, press the shutter button half way, and wait. It then will be focused and ready to shoot.

I have a 40 year old Rollei 2.8F that is like a member of the family.
That said I just bought a Nikon D70 which is great but I doubt it will last four decades.

I bought a new Contax 139 back in 1984. I think I paid about $600 then. I still shoot with it. The Zeiss glass is sweet. Too bad the Contax name is going away.

I have...

Canon SD300 that I keep in my Portabrace Side kit on my belt everyday. Solid performer, it's lasting much longer than I expected (half a year) and it doesn't have to go in for servicing yet (knock on wood.) Torrential downpours, sprinting on spot news, heat & humidity... I'm happy.

Canon 20D as a "real camera" with a 24-70 f2.8L, saving up (slowly) for a 70-200 f2.8L or a magic drainpipe.

10 years with my trusted Nikon FE2s, loved them.

Now they sit as treasured items of my days of being a poor but happy stills snapper.

Lomo Fisheye.

Soviet technology at it's best.

It's a crapshoot with that camera - but sometimes you get amazingly funky shots.

Different type of 'happy-snaps' that's for sure.

Lens question....

I've got a canon T70 and lenses...I'm looking at the rebel.

Obiously my lenses aren't EOS, but would they still fit on the Rebel...if I wanted to go manual?

Can't wait for the Canon 5D... The 5D would be great if it weren't for it's slow shutter speed. Otherwise it seems like a terrific camera.

Currently I have the Digital Rebel and love it. I've looked at moving up to the 20D, but don't have a lot of extra spending cash right now (two kids will put a hamper on a lot of purchases).

Let's see started of in the late 70's with a Pentax K1000, one of the greatest cameras for the money you could ever buy. In 85 I was given a Pentax LX when I got out of High School and was heading to the Art Institute of Pittsburg. Dropped still cameras in 87 for video though I still played now and then with them. Picked up a Sony S70 a few years ago and started shooting again then a Canon 10D 2 years ago and having a blast shooting still work now as a hobby http://www.radfordstudios.com

I have the Nikon coolpix 8800. Got it for x-mas. It takes amazing pics in daylight, but the onboard flash blows. I wanted a SLR, but beggars can't be choosers. I did play with the Nikon D-50 the other day. AWESOME for the price! That will be my next... anyone wanna buy the 8800? :)
