What are some tips on getting another job after being fired?
Just some background... I was terminated after using equipment.... There is a bunch of backstory to this but I don't think everyone wants to read it..... But I am 25 years old.... I was terminated early in Jan. this year.. I have had up until now to think about how to not allow myself in the same position. I have submitted tapes to a few stations.... They give the first call they ask me about my past work and I tell them the whole story.... I send them a tape and nothing... I am wondering what I need to do to show that I can do this job and do it well. PM me or post it please if i need my ass kicked well that might need that tooo

It's happened to me, not for that reason but the result was the same.
The most important thing is to be straight about it. That doesn't mean you have to volunteer the information right up front, but if a potential employer asks you what happened, tell them the truth.
Do NOT badmouth anyone at your former station; "I got fired because the ND was an idiot" can only hurt you.
Just be honest and confident. Tell them that you did some stuff you shouldn't have done, you paid the price, now you have learned from it and are moving on. And hang in there, this'll get better.

We get fired all of the time, welcome to the club. Just be honest and tell them the truth. Also tell them that you learned your lesson and you are ready to move on. Keep you'r hopes up and things will go your way....

Well I have no reason to badmouth anyone... I made the mistake but i would never let myself be put in that position again without some assurances in writing or something like that... Or actually I shouldn't even let that happen.. but i try to be a team player as much as I can

"If you've never been fired then you haven't been working in this business long enough" is what my first news director once said.
I was fired for insubordination(or as I call it...a difference in news philosophy) a few years back and it was the best thing that could have happened for my career. I realized how much I love this business and what my true potential really is. Learn from your mistakes and don't let then happen again, but don't lose the creative drive that is already in you.
There are always two sides to every story as to reasoning behind your terminitaion, but this is a small business and if you burn a bridge you won't be able to cross back over it again, so be honest with potential employers and assure them that you won't make the same mistake twice.
Good luck!!

You need to be honest if a potential employer asks you why you left, but there's no reason to go volunteering the information. There are plenty of employers out there who never ask exactly why you left, simply because they think it's awkward.
If you feel you need an explanation, try to boil it down as much as possible. "I did this, then they did this, then I said this, etc." is probably not necessary. "I was fired for what I consider a misunderstanding, but I'd like to put it behind me and move on," or something similar adapted to your situation, is probably enough.
One of the guys over on Medialine tells a story in which a news director asked him why he was fired:
-------------------------
During an interview, the question was, "What happened to you at [the last company]?"
"I was fired," I answered.
"Why?"
"Well, I think I know... but you can never really be sure about such things."
"Yeah," he said, "I've been there, too."
End of discussion.

The rest of that thread on Medialine (http://www.medialine.com/medialineUBB/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=030290) would probably be a good read for you as well.

I know how you are feeling right now. I resigned at the end of January from a station I loved. When asked why I resigned, I simply say "I made a mistake, owned up to it and resigned." The details to it are not important, but what is, is that I learned from my mistakes It sucks big time, but you just have to keep your head up and keep going.

Yeah i am in the same boat right now, a few months ago i was let go at my station. i loved this place a lot but i was thrown to the curb. it is funny how things happen. i injured myself on my day off. i was not able to shoot for two weeks. i did show up everyday and did editing for the newscast. once i got back to shooting my boss the CP was telling me that i am doing just a fine job and that the ND is likes my shooting. then a few weeks later, the ND, CP, called me into the HR Dept. and told me that i am history.. It is funny because the CP was Praising my work and the ND was also Praising my stuff i shot, three days before I got fired. So right now i am out of a job i have not been shooting for a few months now, and all of my job searches is coming up empty. I am so screwed........

If you wouldn't mind moving to the far north, we need a sports department. Our sports director moved and our other sports reporter just got fired. Its not the best station on town, but at least its work.
