What is it like to work in Myrtle Beach? What is the Pay like, living conditons, and gear. I was thinking about sending down resume tapes down there. Plus are there any current openings in MB?

BTW has one opening up in Lumberton NC (Not bad, but not much of a night life) that I know for sure and possibly one in Florence (not sure...)
...You'd be shooting plenty of high school football on Fridays... No beach openings, sorry, I got the last one... Shoot on DVCPro 610s, edit linear unless you know NewsEdit LT, only SNG truck in the market...either cruise around in a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Ford Escape...assigned gear but pool cars that are only taken home when on call.

PDE isn't advertising any openings...they shoot on 210s, edit linear (i guess?), OLD home-grown eng trucks though I did see a newer one at a recent event...Have only seen their guys cruising around in pick-up trucks

If it was me, again, I'd go to WBTW, again (I'm here now). Pay is ok...You won't need a second job but you won't be living the snobby high-life either.

The WBTW opening -> Go to http://jobs.mediageneral.com and look for job id# WBTW00-106-4

Check TVjobs for openings at wpde. I just saw a couple in the last couple of weeks. Reporter (OMB) and chief Photographer I think. They have never been very good about keeping their web site up to date.
If you want to know about the place, do a board search here on Myrtle Beach its been discussed a number of times.

As a place to live .... can't be beat. Small enough town in the winter that you get to know people, and in the summer .... well, in the summer you wait for it to be winter again. The beauty of it is that there are enough people who live here year round now that they don't roll up the sidewalks in September anymore, so there is plenty of stuff to do, and no big crowds.

I've been out of the TV stations too long to say anything about working conditions - but I can tell you that I jumped the fence to PR from WPDE because of a HUGE pay raise and some problems I had with working conditions.

Pay isn't bad if you're single, esp. if you don't mind having a roomate, but not good enough to support a family unless you're in front of the camera.

WPDE is not a bad place to work. Things are looking up as far as gear goes. THey have been bought by a company that is talking P2 Cameras - redoing a couple of the live trucks and going non linear. The people are great at PDE to work with...Hope that helps. Right now they have a photog opening for the Florence bureau and Chief Photog opening.

Pay is low because it is a small market. People (like me) usually get their first jobs out of college there and then eventually move on. It is a great place to get started in TV, like someone said earlier, its good if you are single but dont look to support a family.

and of course you have the beach. cant beat that.

What rock have I been hiding under? Who's the lucky buyer? And who's in and out in the higher-ups?

yeah, I was wondering about who bought them as well, so I found this:

WPDE-TV changes hands
Barrington deal needs FCC's OK
By Jenny Burns
The Sun News

Barrington Broadcasting Corp., a rapidly growing player in the national media market, has bought WPDE-TV, the company said Thursday.

The ABC affiliate that serves Myrtle Beach and Florence is the company's fifth acquisition in two years.

Chicago-based Barrington was formed in 2003 to buy and operate TV stations in midsize markets across the country.

Barrington said it doesn't expect changes at the station, which it bought from Diversified Communications. The transaction awaits approval from the Federal Communications Commission.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"The TV station is accomplishing what they need to accomplish, and they have strong ties to the local community. We don't anticipate significant changes and we hope that they will keep on doing what they are doing," said Mary Flodin, Barrington's senior vice president for administration and finance.

She said Barrington has confidence in the management at WPDE and wants to see the employees remain in place. The station employs about 65 people.

Employees at WPDE declined to comment.

David Lowell, president of Diversified Communications, said he's pleased that WPDE is being turned over to a company whose leadership has knowledge of the local market.

Barrington's chief executive officer, K. James Yager, has strong ties to South Carolina. He worked as general manager at WIS-TV in Columbia in the 1970s and was chief operating officer of Spartan Communications, which purchased WBTW-TV in Myrtle Beach in 1984.

Yager said ABC has its most successful lineup in recent years. "We believe that ABC's growth will translate into increased momentum for WPDE-TV," he said.

Since 2004, Barrington has purchased five other network-affiliated stations.

Competitor WBTW-TV News13 Vice President and General Manager Michael Pumo said he hopes Barrington will bring high professional standards to the station.

"Barrington's reputation is very good," he said. "I hope they bring that and help make the market a better market. They're in the market to find stations and bring them up."

Barrington's last purchase in April was an ABC affiliate serving Amarillo, Texas.

After getting hit buy a tourist and having to buy a new car and now having a car payment as well as higher insurance. I have found I cannot live here on my pay alone. In the year months since. My 1k is down to less then 100. Which is bad considering my quite stringent spending.
