In Log and Capture mode, using "capture now" to digitize alot of meterial at once, audio rolls out of sync from video up to NINE seconds off. This is just in a 40 minute clip... Is it me doing something stupid? or a problem experienced by smart people? (DV and SX if important)

This has happened to me once or twice before. Unfortunatly I am not sure why it happened. I dumped the clip, saved the project and rebooted FCP. Then I recaptured the clip, it recaptured in sync.

sherp -
what are you using for playback? are you going thru a a/d converter or playing right out of a firewire deck of some sort.

the reason i ask is that it sounds like your audio isn't LOCKED as its being converted...check to see (if you're using a converter) if there is a hardware DIP switch or other way to lock the audio.

just first thought - i'll dig around, too...

ok - found this:
4) Audio and video are out of sync. If there are red flags at the start of your clip, control click on the red flag of your video and select "Move into sync." If there are no red flags at the start of your clip, go to Final Cut Pro -> Audio/Video settings and make sure the Video playback and Audio playback are both set to the same point. For instance, monitoring video via Firewire and audio via Built-in audio will automatically be out of sync by around 6 frames.

and...

check this page out:

(see point 6)

lemme know if it helps....

hope you're well!

Hey Brian,

All settings are matched, it happens frequently, and only using firewire... no third party conversion. FCP1,2,3, did not have problems...
Must be a HD feature!!! Anyway, maybe 5 has fixed that!!
Busy as heck up here, hope to see you soon... Thanks!

Was the footage shot on an XL1?

They have issues like this sometimes. They don't always record audio at exactly 48.000. To get in sync it will read 47.827381 or whatever

Don't capture through timecode breaks.

Is your recorder or player dropping out? That does it as well. Even the smallers amount sometimes.

Also, it could be caused by overloading the computer. Doing things in the background while it captures?

Audio Sync Drift in FCP has been discussed in many editor discussion groups you are not alone. And I havent seen any solution. Ive experienced it in FCP 2, 3, and 4 but its never been nine seconds, usually just a couple of seconds! And it does only happen in long clips(20 minutes or more) Break it up into four 10 minute clips and see if it still happens. Is your hard drive up to snuff for video processing (at least 7200 rpm)? Are you running it through a Kona Card or some other third party capture card? Ill also add, that Ive only had the problems with DV through FireWire, but never using my SX with the AJA I/O card.

thanks everyone,
currently I have tried to capture from a sony dsr 11 dvc deck, a xl-1, pd-150... all same result.
capture is firewire straight to Powerbook G4..
I have resorted to batch captures and "capture now" to 10 minutes... seems fine... you guys are great.. hopefully a quirk that will be fixed in FCP, 5,6,7, or 8.
Tried SX capture thru canopus box and it was fine... just dv.
oh yeah, proper settings followed.
