Army Reservist Pleads To Stealing Luggage
Police Use Credit Card Records To Catch Man
LINTHICUM, Md. -- An Army reservist responsible for securing airports pleaded guilty Monday to stealing luggage from area airports over four years.
Court documents identify the man as Derrick Allen Kysar, 41, who will face sentencing July 1.
According to Arlington, Va., Commonwealth's Attorney Richard Trodden, Kysar stole almost 1,000 pieces of luggage from baggage claim areas at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport.
Prosecutors said Kysar would pick up someone else's luggage from the baggage carousel -- often an area with almost no security -- and leave, WBAL-TV 11 News reporter David Collins reported.
I can see that it's quite easy for some one to pick up a piece of luggage and just walk off," said Mike Webb, a traveler.
According to court documents, authorities recovered luggage that contained jewelry, $5,000 worth of paintings and credit cards.
Prosecutors said Kysar began serving as an Army reservist, stationed at National Airport, shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Collins said someone spotted Kysar selling clothes out of a suitcase in front of his apartment complex.
Police said they caught Kysar using stolen credit cards and forging checks that he found in the luggage, Collins reported. Authorities recovered from Kysar's apartment 60 suitcases with $800 in cash and jewelry worth $700.
