Slow News Day

If you had the choice of:
1) Sitting in the newsroom all day only to go out and shoot a NON-news story, or
2) Run and gun shoot 2 packages without enough time, which would you choose?
It seems like I am covering less news more and more, and I am starting to lose it. Is it just me or am I crazy to want the pressure of cutting a good story with minutes to spare? How do you guys feel about these situations?

It can get real boring just sitting around the newsroom doing nothing. I have only done it a few times mostly on the weekend. I would rather do number 2 becuase time goes by faster, but then again, sometimes the stress can get to be a pain and I would rather do 1. But still the stress can be enjoyable. All on how you look at it.

When it is slow I will take the truck out drive it around and enjoy the day just waiting for a call from the desk to send me somewhere. There is nothing to do on the internet, so I go out for a drive.

I hate just sitting around. At the end of the day, I'm more tired by sittign around than if I had been running all over the place. So...if I had my choice, I'd go for option #2.

Real hell - just be an editor and listen to the scanners without freaking out. Amazing what some people will do for money.

When I move from freelance or being a stringer to working staff, it's like a vacation... The only time I am happy is when there is a late breaking story and there just isn't enough time to get it into the first block. There I am clipping the mic on the talent for a live shot while the opening credits are rolling and we DO make it in time. That's living!

Option 2.
It's pouring outside right now, but I'd rather be out there than sitting around the newsroom writing on b-roll, not that I don't love b-roll, but I've been sitting around all afternoon!
come on- there has to be something going on out there!

Having to wait all day usually means waiting on the reporter, and when you do get back, takes them 3 hours to write a scipt, leaving a half hour to edit a package. Going out for a drive is a big no-no, can't leave the building unless you have your reporter with you, and doesn't matter if you listen to the scanner, producers don't care about breaking news unless they see it on another station. /End of rant.

Being treated like a child really is encouraging, good for morale and of course makes for better news. One of your shooters must have gotten caught taking a nap at Burger King.
