Several years ago a reporter and I followed some local kids who got a trip to San Francisco for a day. I checked the weather and is was going to be sunny and 60 degrees. Perfect. I usually bring a hat everywhere since I don't have a lot of insullation upstairs and buzz the rest, but I decided not to that day.

The kids did all the usual touristy stuff: Ride the trolley, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, etc. All the while I'm following them in brisk, 60 degree weather with the sun beating down on the ol' casaba. By the time we were done with Alcatraz and heading for Golden Gate Park my head felt like it just got napalmed. Swamp, you dumb@$$.

When we got to Golden Gate the first thing I did was run to the gift shop and buy the least cheezy hat I could find. It saved me the rest of the day, but the following week was hell. I was slopping on aloe with a trowel and my forehead was cracking and peeling so bad it looked like a model of plate tektonics. The two things I always keep with me now: Sun block (at least 40 spf) and a HAT! Hairline be dammed.
