Just heard a rumour that WUSA in D.C. is trying to become a storytelling shop like the Gannett stations in Minneapolis,Denver and Atlanta. Anyone know about this, and what are the chances it will happen?

Not sure if it would work in that market, but would be cool to see.

They are going to start working it that way. The GM, News Director and Chief are making it work. I work with the NDin Atlanta. He is a good guy. Hard on people at times but a true news guy. I talked with the GM. Really good guy. as a feel for what news is. Not just a Business.

Yes, This kind of though can work here in DC. There is a lot of Breaking news here. You gotta work the hill! But there are always Great Story's here. If you just give them a chance to be told.

My hats off to WUSA. They and the parent company are trying to do what we have always wanted to do. Tell stories.

Yeah, Capital Edition was an awesome magazine format show hosted by John Goldsmith. I always thought that I could do well by trying to emulate the fine work on that show.

Unlike Minny and Denver, Washington's Gannett is a union shop. That make a difference? I think so.

think they're waiting to hire a director of photography before they fill in other staff positions.

I know of many non-union DPs, myself included who provide high quality, top of the line work with a "whatever-it-takes" attitude. Whether a DP is union or not has makes no difference as it relates to quality, experience and attitude.

There are union shops in smaller markets who hire college grads w/ no experience.

Okay, now all you union DPs, flame away...

What I meant was this...to be a "non-union management DP" in a union shop is a tough road to go down. If you can't shoot, it's hard to lead by example.

It's like being a pitching coach for a baseball team and not being allowed to pick up a baseball. .

If you try to lead by example, in this case, by shooting, you get a grievance by the union.

I've no doubt that many union photogs are great photojournalists...I know many of them that are...it's just that too often an "us versus them" mentality can squash much creativity and enthusiasm...attributes that are favored by the DP who wants to help, and the union photogs that have the desire to get better.
