I was one of your fellow attendees, and I am the one mentioned by John Gross. I would like to say thank you to all of the faculty who helped us. It at times felt kind of boot camp like (though ive honestly never been), long hours, little sleep, and lots of information. I came back with a million ideas, and a new outlook. I know for sure that my station can benefit from what I have learned. I paid my own way, and it felt like I got a masters degree in a week. Thanks to DB, Jerry Hattan, John Gross, Farkas, Bob Dotson, and the dozens of others who helped teach me and the rest of the group. Though I am sure we were all annoyed and wanted to be at home at some point, most likely from tiredness, we all know we are better people now. Thanks for helping me and all us!

I would encourage anyone to go next year or as soon as they can...You will see things completely different, and yes, feel smarter for it all. i went with some preconceived notions, but those were changed as I got to understand what it was about. Simply watching the winning stories online wont tell you what they teach, go and learn for yourself...

Agreed on all points. I learned a lot and have a much better outlook on work now. All of the faculty were friendly and helpful.

My only regret was not going to Mr. Bills more often, but that's probably a good thing... :D

From what I understand this was one of the best workshops when it came to "big names" - esp. on the reporter/producer end of things.

It was a great experience. I was able to walk away with a lot. I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD's.

I was disappointed with the nightlife in Norman. I heard that it wasn't as busy though since it was the week after spring break and the students were pretty much partied out / broke.

Was John Larson there?

He's a "dude" with Dateline!

Yes, John ws there. He stayed over for a second day & was available for anybody who wanted to talk with him. Actually, Steve Hartman & Bob Dotson made themselves available to everyone too.

It was a fantastic week.

Well I am finally back from NPPA then NCAA. So I am a little tired but want to add in my two cents. I learned alot from the workshop. I now see my job differently. What a job we have! I am back to work tommorow and can't wait to use what I have learned. Some major things that still stick in my mind:

1. Craig White- If there is a Photographer hero he is it! His video from Iraq was moving.

2. John Gross- Talk about a guys that proves you can go back to what you love and change careers mid life. His Sports workshop lecture was awesome! I can't wait till football season!!! I am fired up!

3. Darrell Barton and Bob Brandon- These guys really know their stuff. I learned a bunch from them too much to mention here.

4. Kimberly Shirk- Listen to what she says about live truck safety! She has survived an ordeal we don't want to! Look up and Live!!!

5. Ray Farkas etc etc- Worth the lack of sleep to meet and learn from.

Overall, I think that the workshop will benefit everone who attends. Remember these words:
"People are little Gifts"
"The world is full of God's tripods"
"Make every shot count"
"If you have to do something give it all you've got"
"Recognize the moments in your life first then you will recognize the moments in your subject's lives"

Thank you all in the work shop! You all have taught me alot!

One of my favorite things I picked up from the workshop is the rubberband trick. I told everyone in my shop about it.

Yes the rubber band trick! It works! If you need smooth pans when shooting tight the band takes the shake out of the pan. Use it on your pan bar, if you have one.

Someone mentioned a DVD.

Will there be a DVD of the lectures from the workshop? Where can I get a copy?

I think it's only available to people who attended the workshop this year. If you did, it should be mailed to you within a few weeks.

They used to send a VHS tape of all (or most) of the stories presented during the workshop, but switched to DVD last year (or, perhaps, the year before). It's only the stories--no "lecture" stuff, AFAIK...

There is NO DOUBT that this year's workshop was fantastic! Everything said here is almost an understatement! I learned soo much and recommend that anyone rob, cheat, and steal to get there ASAP! Thank you to all the NPPA staff for doing such a wonderful job putting this together... especially that sweetheart Sharon Levy!
