On the other iPod discussion I asked about this, but that thread had lost it's life by then. So ... how much broadcast quality vid can fit on 10GB?
Can you transfer a pkg from an Avid Newscutter to Final Cut Pro on a Mac?
What kind of file is it stored as?
These may be simple questions, but I'd like to be able to transfer pkg's from work to home with my iPod and I don't even know if it's possible.

if i recall, a minute of uncompressed video takes up 1.6 gigs of space. do the math on your package length.
of course if you apply compression to it and turn it into a wmv, avi, mov, or whatever; it will take up considerably less space at a loss of quality.
a standard dvd disc uses mp2 format and has a capacity of 4.5 gigs, to give you a frame of reference.

But will I be able to maintain separate audio tracks and convert from one editing program to another?

But will I be able to maintain separate audio tracks and convert from one editing program to another? Yes... if you are talking about one piece of video (if you compress and then uncompress it). You can't just compress all your captutred vid files to MPEG 2 and then work with the project like normal...
For something like final edited news stories you could go uncompressed without a problem but if you are trying to save complete project files you will run into trouble… if you are trying to transport complete projects with captured vid I would look into a USB2 or firewire drive which should cost around $100 for a basic 80 – 120gb drive.
Generally MPEG compression will take a lot of processing time both to compress and uncompress, especially if you are dealing with 10gb of compressed video. Due to the nature of MPEG compression almost all editing software will need to convert the video back to its native format before you can work with it again.
Also, if you compress and uncompress and recompress using different compression formats you are asking for trouble since each compression involves throwing information out the window and different compressions work in different ways.
