What's gmail? An external storage site?

"Gmail is an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want. The key features are:

Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received.

Don't throw anything away.
1000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.

Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation.

No pop-up ads. No untargeted banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest."

from their website.

I think I heard that Google put spyware in GMail. Don't know if that's true or not. Can't remember where I heard that though.

Warren It's not... Everybody thought that the ads in the interface were spyware because they were ads that were what it thought related to your e-mail. All the computer noobs were running around yelling "Google is reading my e-mail!"

A bot does scan your email for key words jackass. Send an email to yourself and type Nike or the company of your choice. I don't care...it's just a storage facility for me.

A bot does scan your email for key words jackassRight... a bot does, a human doesn't... And the ad's are only recorded if they are clicked

Do your research before you call somebody a jackass... jackass

So you're saying all spyware is read by a human?! What about the part of their privacy policy that says...

Personal information collected by Google may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which Google Inc. or its agents maintain facilities. By using Gmail, you consent to any such transfer of information outside of your country.

We reserve the right to transfer your personal information in the event of a transfer of ownership of Google, such as acquisition by or merger with another company. In such an event, Google will notify you before information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

This would sure play out well in a country like Hungary. Or anywhere else they decide to set up a server.

It basically said (to me at least) "Click an ad and we'll record it and store it on one of our servers, which may be outside your country. If we are purchased by somebody else, we'll tell you so you know that there may be a different rule"

I'll be ignoring this thread now... If someone wants an invite, feel free to PM me

EDIT: Spell check

Different countries have different laws. They can do what ever they like with your information whether you like it or not. That is the point. How hard would it be to sell your information from a google subsidiary out of a country that could care less? Not hard at all.

Ok, I really am going to ignore this thread after this post...

Ok, So I use gmail and click an ad? My info is stored on a server in the czech republic that I clicked an ad for "CHEAP BETACAM TAPES!". Wait... It's a google server, and google is based in California. So unless CA suddenly decided to become an independent country, it's still part of the US, therefore answerable to US laws. They sell my info off the google server to somebody because the czech webmaster wants to make a quick buck... and I sue google in the US because it was their server. US companies doing business in other countries are still answerable to US laws.

Good gah, I feel like our consumer reporter

Why the need for an invite?

Do they only record your banner clicks or are they keeping access to your actual e-mail for possible perusal?

It's still in a Beta stage. I don't know how it will work once it's open to the public. I'm sure it will be set up similar to Yahoo! mail. The invites get you in before all the good names are taken though.

Hotmail works fine for me. They upped their storage limits to 250 megs. I barely filled the old quota, let alone the new one.

Google is the AntiChrist! They are inLeauge with the aliens that inhabit Area 51. They are monitoring this thread right now!

The "Bot" -
I've seen one - tiny grey body, Big Head able to scan millions of emails in a day. Signing off quickly to avoid detection.

My Gmail account is up to 2GB....

On the subject of Google... if you don't use it yet, check out http://maps.google.com/ .... if you're in a big city, click "satelite." Once you've got that down and you have a mobile Internet connection, check out http://gmap.glenmurphy.com/ for a little hack.

That being said I have 40 Gmail invites left.
