is anyone still using this sp setup? I'm looking at one to move to a beta format, and this seems to be the most cost effective solution for me?

I've seen a few guys here and there with that setup. The BVP-7 isn't a bad camera, so long as you've got decent lighting, and the BVV-5 recorder back is a true workhorse. I haven't shot with one of those boat anchors in over two years, and even then it was a back-up for the back-up camera. If it's what you can afford, go for it. As long as the heads are in good shape and there's not a gazillion hours on the other components, you should be good.
The picture is pretty good, I'd say probably comparable with a BVW-300 or 300A.

1. The audio level pots do not stick well. Set your levels. Put a piece of gaff tape over it. Verify audio levels often.
2. Mechanical noise.
3. The flip doors (to the audio and TC functions, and the tape transport functions) fail way too easily.

Make sure the camera head still has all of it's pixels. Those things were infamous for pixel deaths.
