I just recently became an owner of an IPod. What a wonderful world it has become. I wear the thing EVERYWHERE! Thank you Apple for giving me a reason to live. Over the last week i've managed to cram 120 song into it...and i still have room for 900 more (or so.)
I don't know if you're into designing a soundtrack for your life...or diluting yourself with you favorite music at every turn...but if you are...do yourself a favor and get one of these things. Their discrete, user friendly...it's a brilliant idea!
And...NO...i didn't mean to sound like i'm making a sales pitch...i just love my new toy SOOOO much! I want everyone to know about it!!

I am with you 100% Big Mac...
My Ipod has over 520 albums from 650 artists...
broken down that's 16 days worth of music non-stop...
take it on a road trip and you'll wonder how you did it before...
remember when the world had no remote control?
I do, and it sucked...
it's great to carry your own music catalog with you in something the size of a cigarette case, but to have your best friends catalogs too...that's amazing!

P.S Dear APPLE,

Where's my check, yo!

Pardon my ignorance. . . but how does an " ipod " work, can I download songs from my computer ?

I've heard you can put video on these things too...

El Guapo

I don't know about the video...

...yeah 'Tripod' you download songs from you computer into a little electronic device about the size of a deck of cards (but smaller.)

When you buy your ipod, you get a software program with it that you load into your computer...you transfer your CDs or your friends CDs into this software program (called iTunes.) You can also buy songs online and store them in iTunes.
Then plug your iPod into your firewire or ISB port...and a few seconds later they all transfer from iTunes into your iPod. It can hold between 1000-1500 songs (from what i'm told) I only have 200+ loaded so far.

Hi, I'm SandRat, and I'm a PodPerson.
I've got over 3,900 songs. It's sick. I need help.

Lens_Cap,
I use my iPod 40G for mostly music. I do however use it to transfer my Avid Projects, or Final Cut Pro Projects to and from work. I also carry video on it, but you cannot view it.

Hope that helps.

I've got the 15G model that I bought last March and have over almost 4,000 songs on it. Seriously, if you love music, it's like this thing was made for you! I can't say how liberating it is to not have to be stuck listening to the BS that the local radio stations dish up day in and day out. I had no idea that you could also use it to hold Avid or FCP projects on it. I'm telling you, this is the coolest thing since sliced bread!

Have you seen the new Ipod Shuffle? $99 for the 512mb model... (the gum cost about $.50)

Ipods are stupid. What the hell good is it if you can't watch video on it? Plus, they look really gay.

I prefer this:

http://www.archos.com/img/av400/TV_Cradle.gif

http://www.archos.com/products/overview/av400_series.html

I have the 80GB model. After loading up my entire 400 cd collection and about 30 hours of video, I still have 50GB left for MORE music and video. It syncs with a PC via USB, but it has its own compact flash card slot for reading memory sticks right out of my digital camera. It comes with a TV cradle and remote control for playing back video on the TV if you want a bigger screen. (I don't like the resolution when it's blown up for television, but video looks great on the LCD.) They have a camera head coming out later in the year that will allow it to record still pix and video.

Creative Labs and Samsung also have units like this that will play video and view pictures, but without the capacity and accessories of the Archos. The next generation of Archos players (due out later this year) runs on Linux, has a touch screen and functions as a full-function PDA, but with more storage than any other PDA out there.

Apple is being left in the dust.

Whichever the debate over whose got the best, Ipod is my first and I'm very pleased. Thanks Sandrat for the update. My personal opinion of the new 900 song shuffle is it's a nice gift for someone who doesn't really like music. Someone who just uses it to get through a workout, or maybe for some background....but for serious music lovers go for the 40g. My 20g filled up fast....and it's up there close at 3250. I once had it filled up to maximum capacity, the trouble is it's all music you love so you forward to the next shuffle to see what the next song you like is. Enjoy!

The archos is nice but twice the size and weight of an ipod. I was going to buy one then I started asking myself how often I would actually watch video on it. I like my video on a large monitor powered by DVD.

I have about 2500 songs on mine. I take the sony mini out of the ipod and patch it into the audio board on my live truck. That way I can turn it up way too loud when I'm setting up. I also like to play that little Adrian Crownower (sp?) bit that Robin Williams does in the soundtrack from Good Morning Vietnam for the reporters when they are waiting.

And don't forget audible books. If you drive all day you can download audible books to listen to while you drive. http://www.audible.com

To take a tangent, I got XM satellite radio for Christmas, and I'll never go back to local radio. I move it back and forth between my truck and the news van.

Is there some sort of adapter that allows you to listen to you iPod music collection in your car's CD/radio/cassette??

The iTrip is good but be aware that in big market you may not have great results. I use one in Detroit area. We really have no unused space on the dial to use. I don't know if it was as a result of this or not but I wasn't overly impressed. I spend another $10 and got one of those cassette tape adapters with the wire that goes to any walkman, diskman etc. The thing sounds awesome when I use it that way. It just sounds ok when I go FM.

I hear ya OLD GUY...i've only found about 3-4 unused stations here in the valley of the sun...and you are right the cassette adapter is prime...and the fm transmitter doesn't handle my hip hop too well...but in an old live truck with only an fm radio, what else am I going to do? listen to said radio? or lisen to my IPOD?
of course I could listen to the scanner and catch the next big one...naaaaaa

I just got the 40 gig and love it! I use it in the car, at home, while running or on the plane (over 100 flights last year). Plus, when I replace my Volvo S80T6 in a few years, it'll work with the new Volvo iPod integrated sound system. You can even control it with the steering wheel controls!

The iPod interface beats anything else I've seen hands down. It is the greatest when I'm alone in the car on a VO day going an hour to East Nowheresville.

Mine's getting kinda ragged, I think it's time for a new one. It's 1st gen, with 2181 songs on it. (And half of them are CCCRAAP!)

I DO hate the ear buds that come with it though. Anybody know of any more comfortable ear bud type headphones? (cheap ones?)

How much broadcast quality vid can fit on 10GB?

Can you transfer a pkg from an Avid Newscutter to Final Cut Pro on a Mac?

What kind of file is it stored as?
